Inside Hertford College Hertford College was founded as Hart Hall by Elias de Hertford in 1284. In 1740, by Royal Charter, Hart Hall became Magdalen Hall and acquired the status of a College. Magdalen Hall later burnt down and, in 1874, Hertford College was born.
Of particular interest is the bridge over New College Lane which links the two main buildings of the College. The Bridge was modelled on the Bridge of Sighs in Venice. Bridge of Sighs
A new quadrangle was completed in 1981 which includes study bedrooms, a modern lecture theatre, and students' common rooms
Hertford College lies in the very centre of Oxford, in one of it's most beautiful streets, immediately opposite the famous main University library, The Bodleian. The city centre, shopping streets and other principal places of interest are all just a short walk away.
